Warwick Cricket Club Committee

Message from our 'Acting' Chairman.

Dear Members
I am writing this letter to you as acting Chairman to explain some of the recent changes we have made to the organisation of the club. As you may know the club has had to adapt over the last few weeks to the temporary loss of Mike Wilson as Chairman and the resignation of Tim Marrion as the elected first team captain for the 2008 season. Under the constitution of WCC, the chairman in consultation with two other senior committee members is empowered to take action in the best interests of the club. Following such a meeting, Jamie Coleman will now captain the Saturday first team for the coming season. As a result, Simon Hathaway has agreed to take over the Sunday first team captaincy. With the other changes of team captains over the winter, a further change has been made to team selection with Dave Griffith now acting as chairman of the committee to oversee the process. Lastly I would like to thank you for your continuing support of WCC and wish you success and enjoyment off and on the pitch over the coming season.

Yours sincerely

M Hodgkin (Acting Chairman)

Warwick CC Chairman 2008

Mike Wilson

Can I take this opportunity to wish all players, club officials, friends and site readers a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I sense that 2008 will be a definitive and important season for Warwick Cricket Club. We have new Saturday league captains, entering 4 league teams, increasing junior teams to 4 within the introduction of U17’s and the club trying to achieve Clubmark status. ‘Player of the Year 2007’ Tim Marrion replaces Dave Griffith as 1st team captain with ‘Clubman of the Year 2007’ Dave White replacing Simon Hathaway. Owen Griffiths retains the 3rd team duties and stalwart Tony Sarson takes a 4th team into the leagues for the first time. All–in-all very exciting times ahead.

On a fine morning in July of 1864,a Warwickshire County side took first knock in their two day match against Staffordshire. The turf first laid on the new ground in 1863 was much improved and a handsome, just completed pavilion stood proudly in its semi-rural surroundings.Having a spacious dining saloon, two dressing rooms,a bar for refreshments and a full sized verandah on which a band would play during intervals. So, the ambitions of the Earl of Warwick and his friends to establish County Cricket in the Town of Warwick had been finally realised.
Its first president, The Earl, provided the land, and, with the help of ten gentlemen of the new committee,£400 was raised to erect the pavilion and the prospect of Cricket for years to come had been firmly established at Hampton Road.
With Ash scoring 72,Baldecot 48 and Margetts 20,Warwickshire totalled 211.Then fine bowling from David Buchanan, one of the best slow bowlers in the Country, aided by Kenny, meant that Staffs were dismissed for 56 and 88. A convincing victory indeed.
Sadly, however,it was not to last because a few years later,a true County Club was established when the Edgbaston grond opened.
The old Warwick Cricket Club, who had regularly played on the Common(Racecourse fields) had lost many of its members when the County side was established, but fortunes changed! It began to thrive again with its home ground now at Hampton Road-practice amongst 80-odd members took place on most evenings with regular fixtures throughout the season.
For a time it was the premier side in Warwick but change again led to its decline and for many seasons the Eagle Engineering Cricket tennis and Bowls Clubs had there home where, years before,David Buchanan, The County Captain had played. Wisden wrote of him,"He bowled to be hit and defended for his wickets on pitched up balls with plenty of spin on them".
The Warwick Cricket Club was born in 1960 when Eagle Engineering sold its the Ground to Warwick Town Corporation.
The members now share their much changed home with the thriving Hockey Club and tennis Club, both of which boast many members and excellent facilities both on and off the field.reminders of the Club's historical past can still be seen in the carefully restored and modernised pavilion; one which would grace any ground in the Country. Many a bowler, on his run-up, finds the saddles on the square slightly disconcerting. Not surprising really if you consider the innumerable layers of top dressing added over the last 130 years of its lifetime.
In the next few Wekks, white on green will herald the beginning of yet another season in this great traditional game of ours. Long may Cricket on the old County field continue to flourish, and may all our playing and non-playing guest, members and friends enjoy another memorable summer at Hampton Road.

"We have enjoyed two fantastic seasons, but lets not forget that we are now only going to be playing at the minimum level at which a Club of our standing should be.We must build on the past two seasons, set our sights high and push for promotion to the Premier League. At the time of writing I am aware of 2 new players who will be challenging for 1st XI places. With no departures and plenty of strengh in depth I see no reason why we shouldn't enjoy another great season given our fair share of luck with injuries and the weather. The availability of the players is of paramount importance from the start of the season right to the end as a settled team bringsconfidence in each other and woderful team spirit.Come on boys lets keep it going !"
